About this Garuda Bird Thai Art

Garuda bird (in Thai ครุฑ, khrut) is a legendary creature in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. He is also known as the King of birds. The oldest book that mentions about Garuda is the Mahabharata, which is an ancient epic poem written in 400 BCE. While in Buddhism, his firstly appearance was found in the Mahasamya Sutta.

According to the traditional myth, Garuda is a son of Kasyapa and Vinata. He was born with a human body, while had a bird’s head, wings, and legs. His mother was a slave of Kadru, the co-wife of his father. To free his mother, Garuda had to bring the Amrita or Immortality Nectar. He fought against all gods and eventually got the Amrita to liberate his mother.

Because of his courage and gratitude for his mother, Garuda has become a symbol of Virtue, Royalty, and Bravery. In Thailand, Garuda is the national symbol of the Kingdom, also used as the Royal symbol. Our expert artist exquisitely created this work with acrylic paints on canvas. The multitude of colors gives a vibrant look and sophisticate appearance.
